Overview

Hundreds of non-citizen detainees held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have launched hunger strikes at dozens of detention centers across the United States. Protesters are targeting facilities in states including Washington, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and New Jersey.

Advocates and groups such as La Resistencia report that detainees are protesting inhumane conditions, including unsanitary food and water, lack of medical care, physical and racist abuse, and retaliation for filing complaints. Josefina Mora-Cheung, director of organizing at La Resistencia, noted a “skyrocketing of numbers” in participation, suggesting detainees are willing to risk their lives to highlight “life-threatening” conditions and the denial of due process.
