ICE detention of Brazilian nationals in the United States
Overview
Recent reports highlight separate instances of Brazilian nationals being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In Massachusetts, 29-year-old Iara do Carmo Santana was detained following a mental health crisis triggered by a miscarriage. After being taken into local police custody on allegations of assault, she was transferred to an ICE detention center in Burlington. Santana reported being denied necessary post-procedure medication and being forced to sleep on the floor during her stay.
In Washington, 36-year-old Sara de Cassia Alves was detained at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport while traveling with her American husband. While official reasons for the detention have not been released, family members suggest the issue involves her visa status and a work-related extension of stay. Relatives have reported crowded conditions at the facility and have launched fundraising campaigns to cover legal fees and potential bond costs.
