ICE immigration enforcement operations in the United States

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has conducted various enforcement operations across different regions of the United States.

In late July 2026, ICE agents carried out operations in Auburn and Renton, Washington. Local police departments in both cities reported they were not notified in advance and did not participate in the actions. In Renton, an individual was taken into custody outside City Hall, while Auburn officials cited the state’s Keep Washington Working (KWW) Act as a reason for their lack of involvement in civil immigration enforcement.

By mid-August 2026, ICE conducted targeted operations in Portland, Maine. These included the apprehension of two individuals near the Cumberland County courthouse—described by an ICE spokesperson as a “targeted enforcement operation” involving people who had overstayed legal entries—and the detention of a Zambian asylum seeker at the Portland International Jetport. Following a federal court challenge, the asylum seeker was ordered to be released, though advocates noted several other detentions occurred at the airport over a two-week period.
