IDC Frontier ransomware attack in Japan
Overview
A ransomware attack targeting IDC Frontier’s IDCF Cloud service caused widespread operational disruptions across Japan. The incident, which began in early October 2026, specifically impacted the East Japan Region 1 and several availability zones, including tesla, henry, pascal, and joule. The attack resulted in the suspension of virtual servers and potential data loss, prompting the company to disconnect the affected region from the network.
The outage had significant downstream effects, impacting 495 organizations, including local government entities and private companies. Notable disruptions included Nissui Logistics suspending shipping operations at 17 sites, Peach Aviation experiencing itinerary email failures for approximately 1.89 million customers, and the Ibaraki Prefecture government losing access to its official websites.
Subsequent reports indicated that the attack also disrupted managed Movable Type (MT) Cloud services, causing website outages for clients using the CMS. In response, Six Apart migrated 31 affected servers to the Sakura Cloud environment using backups stored on Google Cloud to mitigate the impact.
