Identity deception by Philadelphia activist

Overview

Hannah Gann, a Philadelphia teacher at The Workshop School and a social activist, admitted to misrepresenting her racial and ethnic identity for several years. Gann falsely claimed to be Black, Palestinian, and at times Tunisian while participating in pro-Palestinian and racial justice movements.

The deception was revealed after members of Philly Educators for Palestine and the Racial Justice Organizing Committee confronted her. Following an hour of questioning, Gann released a social media video admitting she “hid the truth or outright lied about my background to everyone in my life.” Both organizations have severed ties with Gann, stating her actions caused harm to the communities she claimed to represent. The situation also involved fellow teacher Keziah Ridgeway, who confronted Gann after noticing inconsistencies in her heritage claims.

Following the revelations, the local pro-Palestinian educators group Gann helped lead has dissolved. While media coverage has centered on the identity fraud, Jason Holtzman, director of Philadelphia’s Jewish Community Relations Council, stated that Gann had been monitored since December 2023 due to inflammatory remarks and the spreading of “antisemitic tropes.” Gann has since deactivated her Instagram account.
