The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia has been engaged in several investigations regarding police conduct and injuries during arrests. In one instance, the IIO launched an investigation into an alleged injury sustained by a man during a Victoria police arrest in June. The agency is working to determine if the harm meets the threshold of ‘serious harm’ as defined by the Police Act. In a separate matter, the IIO concluded an investigation into a 2025 incident involving the Langley RCMP. The investigation, which concerned a man who died following medical distress during a police response, resulted in no charges being laid against officers. In August 2026, the IIO opened investigations into two incidents involving serious, non-life-threatening injuries. In Nelson, investigators are looking into the August 11 arrest of an intoxicated and uncooperative youth on Hume Lane, who required hospital treatment after sustaining injuries while in police custody. In Abbotsford, an investigation is underway regarding an August 12 encounter on Mouat Drive involving an armed individual; the man sustained serious injuries during an arrest on an upper balcony and was transported to a hospital. Additionally, the IIO is investigating a May 8, 2026, incident in Williams Lake. A woman sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries during an interaction with an RCMP officer in a municipal park after previously interacting with city staff and bylaw officers. The IIO was notified of the matter on July 3 by the Police Accountability Unit of the BC First Nations Justice Council and is currently seeking witnesses or video footage. Investigators are working to determine if the injuries meet the threshold of serious harm and whether there is a connection between the harm and officer action or inaction.
