The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia continues to investigate various incidents involving police conduct and injuries. In Nelson, the IIO has concluded its investigation into the August 11, 2026, arrest of an intoxicated and uncooperative youth. While the youth sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries while in custody, the IIO’s chief civilian director determined there was no connection between the injuries and police action or inaction. A new investigation has been launched in Nanaimo following an incident on September 12, 2026. RCMP responded to a report of a man refusing to leave a bar on Bastion Street; during an attempted arrest on the sidewalk, the man sustained an injury related to a broken glass window. The IIO is seeking witnesses and video footage to determine if the injury meets the threshold of ‘serious harm’ as defined by the Police Act and if officer conduct was a factor. Saanich police and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team responded to reports of a possible assault at a residence on Woodhall Drive. After several hours of negotiation, police used a service dog and less-lethal weapons to take a man into custody, resulting in his hospitalization. The IIO is investigating whether the man’s injuries meet the ‘serious harm’ threshold and if they are connected to officer actions. The agency is currently appealing for witnesses to contact their hotline. Other ongoing or recent matters include an investigation into an officer-involved shooting near Salmo initiated on September 3, 2026, and an inquiry in Vancouver regarding a vehicle strike on a man in a laneway.
