IKEA home organization and space optimization initiatives
Overview
Following the release of the ‘Store & Organise Report 2026’, which analyzed global trends in home clutter and organization, IKEA launched a global campaign titled ‘Make space for what you love’.
The initial report identified various consumer behaviors, such as the ‘silent protest’ phenomenon where household members leave items out for others to tidy, and noted that 82% of respondents retain items for emotional reasons. The findings highlighted regional differences in perceptions of clutter and a shift toward homes that reflect personal stories rather than minimalism.
In response to these trends, the company initiated a campaign focused on affordable space optimization. This included the installation of handcrafted 1:12 scale miniature homes by artist Christopher Robin Nordström in cities such as Melbourne, Chengdu, and Beijing. In Singapore, the campaign expanded to include interactive activities, such as the ‘IKEA HEJ FIT Challenge’ in partnership with Volvo.
Further data from the ‘Life at Home Report 2026’, based on a survey of over 31,000 participants across 31 countries, provides additional nuance to these trends. The study found that 56% of respondents view the ideal home as a place for ‘relaxing and unwinding’, while 38% prioritize space for hobbies. The report also identified the kitchen as the most difficult area to keep tidy (24%) and a frequent source of household arguments (37%). Additionally, while 59% of people prefer a home with personal character over minimalism, perceptions of clutter as an expression of creativity vary significantly by region, reaching 31% in China compared to only 4% in Japan.
