Illinois storm and tornado disaster recovery

Following a period of severe storms and a record-breaking tornado season in which Illinois recorded over 200 tornadoes, Governor J. B. Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation for 15 counties in August 2026. This proclamation was designed to allow rural communities to access up to $250,000 in state disaster relief funding for debris removal and public infrastructure repairs.

By mid-September, the state’s recovery efforts transitioned toward seeking federal assistance. Governor Pritzker requested a presidential major disaster declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for eight specific counties: Champaign, Cook, Ford, Fulton, McLean, Tazewell, Vermilion, and Will. This request was based on assessments showing that damage from tornadoes, flooding, and wind gusts approaching 100 mph exceeded the state’s independent capacity to respond.

While awaiting a federal decision, the Governor extended the existing state disaster proclamation for an additional 30 days to maintain available resources and expedite local government procurement and contracting processes.
