Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma senatorial bid dispute
Overview
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma initially secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the Imo West Senatorial District for the 2027 elections. This move prompted legal debate regarding the constitutional requirement that a governor cannot hold two offices simultaneously.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has since nullified Uzodimma’s nomination. Justice Obiora Egwuatu ruled that former Governor Rochas Okorocha was the lawful winner of the party’s primary election held on May 18, 2026. The court found that evidence established Okorocha had actually won the primary, describing the nomination of Uzodimma as “unlawful and fraudulent” and noting that documentation used to support Uzodimma’s candidacy appeared to be fabricated in breach of the Electoral Act.
Following a legal challenge by Okorocha, who contested initial results that credited Uzodimma with 230,464 votes against Okorocha’s 1,098, the court ordered the APC to submit Okorocha’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the authentic flag-bearer. The ruling also restrains Uzodimma from parading himself as the APC senatorial candidate for the election scheduled for January 16, 2027. Okorocha presented evidence asserting he secured 150,780 votes to Uzodimma’s 102,158.
In response to the judgment, the Imo State chapter of the APC has rejected the ruling, maintaining that Uzodimma is the legitimate candidate. The state government has vowed to appeal the decision, characterizing it as a “travesty of justice” and alleging that the court's decision was based on forged documents. Okorocha stated that while he was not personally happy about the declaration, the ruling serves to correct previous allegations of forgery against him.
