Impact of conflict on South Lebanon healthcare

Overview

Israeli attacks in South Lebanon have caused significant damage to medical infrastructure, resulting in the loss of three critical facilities: the state hospitals in Bint Jbeil and Mays al-Jabal, and the Martyr Salah Gandour Hospital in Bint Jbeil. This destruction, combined with population displacement, has shifted the medical burden to hospitals in interior regions such as Tibnin, Nabatieh, and Tyre.

Hisham Fawaz, head of the Directorate of Hospitals and Dispensaries at the Ministry of Public Health, noted an urgent need for sustainable support for medicines, supplies, and equipment. The emergency medical services sector remains particularly vulnerable due to casualties among healthcare workers and the loss of ambulances and response centers.

In response to the resilience shown by frontline medical staff, the Roads For Life-The Talal Kassem Fund for Post Accident Care held a ceremony at the Ministry of Public Health to honor government hospitals. The event recognized the administrative, medical, and nursing staff at institutions including Nabih Berri University, Marjayoun, Bint Jbeil, Mays Al-Jabal, Tibnin, Qana, and Tyre government hospitals for their continued service despite the risks faced during the war.
