IMSS-Bienestar program implementation and controversies

Overview

The IMSS-Bienestar program is undergoing significant operational shifts and infrastructure developments across Mexico. In Veracruz, health committees have alleged corruption regarding the ‘La Clínica es Nuestra’ federal program. Complainants claim that officials from IMSS-Bienestar and Veracruz Health Services are intervening in the selection of contractors for medical unit improvements, allegedly attempting to restrict procurement to a specific list of providers and bypassing the decision-making authority of citizen committees.

In other regions, the program is focusing on infrastructure expansion and modernization. In Tamaulipas, investments ranging from 37 to 56 million pesos are being used to renew hydrosanitary networks and upgrade obsolete medical equipment in several hospitals. Additionally, plans for a new 102-bed hospital in Nuevo Laredo are expected to begin in early 2027. However, operational challenges persist, such as in Rosarito, where medical staff reported shortages of essential chemical reagents for critical testing, forcing patient referrals to private laboratories.
