Inclusive education resource challenges in Spain
Overview
A study by the University of Salamanca and the confederation Plena inclusión España indicates that 80% of Spanish families with children who have intellectual or developmental disabilities must use personal time and money to compensate for insufficient public resources in inclusive education.
The report describes an “enormous economic and time burden” on these households, noting that 67.3% of surveyed families dedicate daily resources to supplement school tasks, while 15% do so frequently. Families of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) reportedly face the most significant challenges in securing adequate schooling.
In response to the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training’s strategic plan for inclusive education, Plena inclusión has called for the plan to be backed by sufficient economic resources so that the right to education does not rely on the extra effort of families.
