India & Sri Lanka life insurance earnings surge
Entities: Anup Bagchi · SBI Life Insurance · PNB Housing Finance · TVS Motor Company · Dabur India
Overview
India’s life‑insurance market continued to post robust earnings in mid‑2026, with the state‑run Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) reporting a FY26 net profit of $6.07 billion and total premium income of $56.63 billion, a 56.7% share of new‑business premiums and an improved solvency ratio of 2.35. A RBI Financial Stability Report highlighted that policy surrenders now represent about 38% of life‑insurance payouts, signalling growing pressure on insurers’ asset‑liability management.
LIC also announced a 23% jump in Q1 FY27 standalone profit to Rs 13,492 crore and a 7% rise in net premium income, while removing credit‑card payments from its online portal over a fee dispute. In Sri Lanka, SLIC Life disclosed a record Rs 14.68 billion policyholder bonus, the largest in the country’s history.
Private players sustained the earnings momentum. ICICI Prudential Life posted a 28% Q1 profit increase to Rs 386 crore, with premium growth of 14.6% and a solvency ratio above 225%. HDFC Life reported a 12% profit rise to Rs 611 crore, net premium income of Rs 16,548 crore and a 13% jump in assets under management. Canara HSBC Life posted a 19% premium rise, new‑business premium of ₹1,044 crore (up 25.2% YoY), and a 41.5% surge in protection business, supported by a new distribution partnership with West Bengal Gramin Bank.
Across the sector, insurers are channeling higher earnings into digital transformation, product‑mix discipline and expanded distribution, even as surrender trends and operational cost pressures pose emerging challenges.
