India-Bangladesh border immigration enforcement
Overview
Authorities in Northeast India have intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration from Bangladesh. In Assam, police arrested 27 Bangladeshi nationals in Guwahati and Rangiya who had reportedly entered via Meghalaya to seek employment. Officials are seeking expulsion orders for the group.
Security challenges persist along the India-Bangladesh border, with approximately 21 percent of the 4,096 km stretch remaining unfenced due to local landowner opposition. Investigations have revealed criminal networks utilizing fake PAN and Aadhaar cards to help foreign nationals pose as Indian citizens.
In a separate incident at the Paltan Bazar Railway Station in Guwahati, police apprehended two Bangladeshi nationals following a tip-off. The individuals confessed to entering illegally through Meghalaya to travel to West Bengal for work. Authorities recovered fake Aadhaar cards and Bangladeshi currency, and proceedings are being initiated under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, to expel them.
