INDIA bloc leadership dispute in Tamil Nadu
Overview
Political tension has emerged within the ruling coalition in Tamil Nadu regarding the INDIA bloc’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Initially, Tamil Nadu Minister P Viswanathan identified Rahul Gandhi as the “definitive” candidate for the alliance. This stance was a response to leaders from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) who have advocated for their chief, Vijay C Joseph, to be projected as the candidate. While Congress MP Karti Chidambaram noted that leadership depends on securing a Lok Sabha majority, the dispute intensified.
By late August, the rift deepened as Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister S Rajesh Kumar issued an ultimatum, threatening that the two Congress ministers in the state cabinet will resign if the TVK does not endorse Rahul Gandhi. This friction follows reports ranking Vijay as a preferred candidate alongside Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, particularly after a private media survey ranked him as the third most preferred prime ministerial candidate in India.
On August 31, 2026, the standoff continued as Minister Kumar and P Vishwanathan reaffirmed their readiness to resign to uphold the Congress party’s commitment to Gandhi. While TVK PWD Minister Aadhav Arjuna suggested the next Prime Minister should hail from Tamil Nadu—a move interpreted as a push for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to take a national role—Congress Legislature Party leader Tharahai Cuthbert dismissed rumors of a rift, stating that Vijay has endorsed Gandhi.
In an attempt to stabilize the alliance, Congress leaders Manickam Tagore and Praveen Chakravarty met with Chief Minister Vijay at the Secretariat. However, the movement of Tharahai Cuthbert to the front row of the opposition benches in the Tamil Nadu Assembly has further fueled speculation regarding the stability of the coalition.
