India-China border LAC deployment status

Overview

According to India’s Ministry of Defence Annual Report for 2025–26, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) significantly reduced its deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) during 2025. This drawdown followed a 2024 disengagement agreement in the Depsang and Demchok sectors. Despite this reduction, the PLA maintains a presence of approximately 40,000 to 50,000 troops, including 10 combined arms brigades along the LAC. The Ministry of Defence characterized the northern border situation as ‘stable yet sensitive.’

While diplomatic engagements, such as the resumption of Special Representatives talks and meetings between leaders at the BRICS Summit, have contributed to stability, military experts advise caution. Retired Major General Pramod Sehgal has urged India to maintain high strategic vigilance, noting that China’s superior road, rail, and communication infrastructure allows for the potential of rapid troop redeployment. Consequently, experts emphasize that India must continue focusing on force modernization and border infrastructure development to ensure long-term stability.
