India's Semicon 2.0 expands ecosystem and defence tech

India is accelerating its technology roadmap through the Semicon 2.0 programme, providing a Rs 1.27 lakh crore ($13.25 billion) outlay to incentivize chip design, intellectual property, equipment, materials, advanced packaging, and R&D. While the first phase of the India Semiconductor Mission focused on ecosystem creation, ISM 2.0 aims to deepen capabilities in talent development and system design. As of late 2026, the program has reached significant milestones. Commercial production has commenced at five of the twelve previously approved semiconductor plants, with Micron, Kaynes Semicon, and CG Semi already shipping products. The chip design ecosystem has expanded to approximately 200 companies, with over 105 startups utilizing advanced Electronic Design Automation tools. To support this, the government is working toward training 100,000 technicians and engineers, building upon 70,000 already trained.
