India counter-terrorism diplomatic efforts at UN
Overview
During the United Nations General Assembly, India has focused on addressing cross-border terrorism and strengthening international counter-terrorism cooperation.
At the UN General Assembly Sixth Committee, Indian representative Biplab Kumar Deb criticized the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for “wilful blindness” regarding terrorism. Deb accused the OIC of failing to distinguish between victims and perpetrators, specifically concerning India’s actions against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He also advocated for the adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT).
Following these remarks, an Indian parliamentary delegation led by Sikander Kumar reiterated a “zero tolerance” policy against cross-border terrorism. The delegation met with Alexander Zouev, Acting Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, to discuss enhancing cooperation in counter-terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, and curbing terror in cyberspace.
Additionally, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire to discuss strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations, specifically regarding defense cooperation, anti-terrorism training, and capacity building.
