India cyber fraud and money laundering investigation

Overview

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating a massive pan-India cybercrime and ‘digital arrest’ fraud network involving approximately ₹28,000 crore in banking transactions. The investigation was triggered by a complaint from a victim in Goa who lost ₹2.60 crore.

Authorities discovered that the syndicate utilized roughly 400 mule bank accounts held in the names of proxy directors across various sectors, including travel, commodities, and foreign exchange, to divert and launder funds. These funds were reportedly converted into foreign currency or withdrawn as cash.

In late October 2026, the ED arrested lawyer Rasesh Upadhyay (also known as Rasesh Shah) at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport while he was attempting to travel to Delhi. Upadhyay is alleged to have acted as a key intermediary. This arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in connection with the case to seven.
