Overview

The Indian government is accelerating the transition from Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for households. Under the LPG Control Order 2026, residents in areas where PNG infrastructure is available will be prohibited from maintaining both LPG and PNG connections simultaneously. To facilitate this shift, Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal has requested state and Union Territory governments to appoint district-level nodal officers to coordinate with gas distribution companies. Additionally, the government is establishing PNG Coordination Committees in every geographical area to identify eligible households and issue statutory notices.

To support the broader energy infrastructure, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved a ₹7,000 crore expansion of the LPG pipeline network. Managed by GAIL (India) Limited, this 1,800-km project will span Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, and Goa. Upon completion, the authorized common-carrier LPG pipeline network is expected to expand by approximately 23.5%, increasing from 7,700 km to 9,500 km.

Effective September 1, 2026, a new incentive scheme will support City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities to expand household networks and convert inactive connections. Under this initiative, eligible distributors will receive an additional allocation of 200 standard cubic metres of cheaper, domestically produced APM gas for every incremental billed domestic PNG connection. This scheme also mandates that consumers who switch to a new PNG connection must surrender their existing LPG connection within a 30-day window.

As of August 31, 2026, the deadline for completing Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC for LPG connections has passed. Consumers who failed to comply may face temporary service suspensions, difficulties in booking refills, or the loss of domestic subsidies, potentially resulting in commercial rates for cylinders.
