India FMCG earnings mixed in Q1 FY27, HUL profit dip

Overview

July‑August filings keep India’s fast‑moving consumer goods (FMCG) and health‑related sectors on a fragmented footing. Nestlé India posted a 47.9% profit jump to ₹975 crore, with sales up 25.4% and exports rising 35.6%, and announced a €3 billion cash raise as it spins off its bottled‑water business into a 50:50 joint venture with Platinum Equity (new entity Peranel). Granules India again delivered a near‑60% profit surge, driven by margin expansion and 22% revenue growth.

Hindustan Unilever’s revenue rose about 10% to ₹17.34 trillion, but consolidated net profit fell 3% year‑on‑year to roughly ₹2,673‑2,680 crore. The company absorbed half of an estimated 10% input‑cost inflation, passing only a 5% price rise to consumers and leaning on volume‑led growth (underlying volume up 5%). EBITDA climbed 8% to ₹3,947 crore, keeping the margin near 23%. Shares slipped nearly 6% on the earnings day but rebounded about 4% intraday, ending the session up roughly 3.9%. Several brokerages upgraded the stock, setting target prices between ₹2,450 and ₹2,850 and labeling it bullish despite the profit miss.

Pharma and health‑retail firms faced pressure: Cipla’s profit fell 39% to ₹7.89 billion, Dr Reddy’s saw a 69% plunge to ₹4,435 crore, and MedPlus reported a 22% profit decline to ₹331.8 million, citing higher expansion costs and competition. Meanwhile, Larsen & Toubro posted a 14% PAT rise and Asian Paints a 40% profit jump, while Vedanta Power recorded a loss. Domestic demand and export momentum sustain a few FMCG leaders, but margin stress and operational setbacks linger for pharma and health‑retail players.
