India-Germany Project 75(I) submarine cooperation
Overview
The India-Germany submarine deal under Project 75(I) has reached a stage where terms are finalized on the German side, awaiting internal approval from Indian authorities. The project involves a partnership between Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) to construct six next-generation conventional submarines in India.
Estimated to exceed ₹90,000 crore, the initiative focuses on substantial technology transfer to bolster India’s domestic manufacturing. The submarines are expected to feature advanced sensors, stealth capabilities, and Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. Beyond the primary deal, the Indian Navy is also considering the acquisition of three additional Scorpene-class submarines and plans to utilize an indigenous AIP system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for existing vessels.
