India-Germany strategic and maritime cooperation

Overview

India and Germany are expanding their bilateral strategic and maritime cooperation. The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) initiated the process of establishing a new office in Hamburg to engage with European shipowners, managers, and technology companies, specifically targeting sectors such as green shipping, decarbonization, and digitalization.

This maritime engagement has since expanded through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Indian Maritime Centre (IMC) and the German Maritime Centre (DMZ) during the SMM Hamburg 2026 event. Additionally, the diplomatic relationship was reaffirmed via a phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who discussed cooperation in trade, defense, clean energy, and advanced technologies to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations.
