India health ministry reforms and funding

In early July 2026 India’s health ministers began a systematic review of state‑run health programmes, emphasising stronger anti‑corruption safeguards across the sector. By the end of the month, Union Health Minister JP Nadda announced a slate of concrete investments for the state of Kerala. The package includes provisional approval for 100 additional MBBS seats at the K. Karunakaran Memorial Government Medical College, a commitment to establish an AIIMS campus, and plans for the country’s first genetics institute in the state. Further measures target district hospitals, trauma‑care centres, expanded health‑insurance coverage, upgrades to mental‑health facilities, central funding for HPV vaccination of girls, and enhanced support for the National Health Mission, the State Virology Institute and drug supplies for non‑communicable diseases. Nadda also pledged investigations into delays at the medical college, labeling them “criminal negligence.”
