India healthcare infrastructure and workforce expansion

Overview

Indian Union Health Minister JP Nadda has been highlighting India’s advancements in healthcare infrastructure and workforce capacity. During the 79th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia in Timor-Leste, Nadda reported a significant expansion in medical education, noting that medical colleges increased from 387 to 858 since 2014, alongside substantial growth in MBBS and postgraduate seats.

In addition to these regional diplomatic efforts, Nadda inaugurated new domestic facilities in Andhra Pradesh, including 10 Critical Care Blocks and 12 Integrated Public Health Laboratories. He described these developments as vital for creating a “resilient health security architecture” to manage critical illnesses and detect disease threats. Nadda also noted India’s international recognition for eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus and its leadership in managing non-communicable diseases.
