Overview

India has provided significant humanitarian and infrastructure assistance to neighboring countries following natural disasters.

In Sri Lanka, India delivered over 250 metric tonnes of Bailey bridges as part of a USD 450 million reconstruction package following Cyclone Ditwah. Indian Army engineers are tasked with installing these bridges to restore connectivity in isolated areas. This aid is part of broader bilateral cooperation, which includes credit agreements for railway and livestock development.

Following devastating floods caused by the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal, India has intensified its humanitarian assistance. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dispatched multiple relief flights to Kathmandu, bringing the total amount of aid to approximately 57.5 to 60 tonnes. In addition to initial shipments of temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, medicines, and food, a third consignment has arrived containing portable generators, dignity kits, and water purification tablets.

To support ground operations, an 11-member medical and tunnel rescue team has been deployed to assist with relief efforts, including a potential rescue at a hydroelectric project. The MEA has established a 24/7 control room to coordinate the response, and India is preparing to mobilize Bailey bridges to support rescue and relief efforts in flood-affected regions.

In Nepal, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reports that 579 bodies have been recovered, 101 people are injured, and the number of missing persons has risen to 1,924. In the Indian state of West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that a rescue team will be dispatched to Kathmandu to assist in locating 37 West Bengal residents who remain missing.
