India’s manufacturing sector is undergoing a transition toward digital transformation and specialized workforce development. A KPMG report indicates that future productivity gains will depend on work redesign, organizational reshaping, and the integration of artificial intelligence rather than traditional scale economics or wage arbitrage.

In support of these technological and industrial shifts, new AI-driven ecosystems are being introduced, such as the POVA 8 Series, which offers multilingual transcription and translation capabilities. Additionally, efforts to diversify and skill the manufacturing workforce are underway through initiatives like the ‘Women for Manufacturing’ program, which has trained 2,700 women for technical roles in assembly and CNC operations across states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.

Recent developments show AI integration expanding into specialized industrial applications. Supported by the IndiaAI Mission, Shodh AI has developed LUCAN, a ‘Physical AI foundation model’ intended to bridge the gap between molecular-scale research and large-scale manufacturing by reasoning through physical constraints such as heat transfer and flow changes. Furthermore, Intellect Design Arena Ltd. has launched MSOCK, an AI-native engineering system designed to provide enterprise-level context to AI to help it understand complex business processes.

This technological expansion is also visible in healthcare through acoustic AI for tuberculosis screening and retinal-image screening for diabetic retinopathy, supported by the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. In the education sector, India has become OpenAI’s largest student market for ChatGPT, with over 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses provided to institutions including IIM Ahmedabad and AIIMS New Delhi.
