India NEET exam protest controversy
Entities: Kangana Ranaut · Saurav Das · Uttar Pradesh Police Inspector · Rakhi Sawant · Narendra Modi
Overview
In late July 2026, actress‑politician Kangana Ranaut condemned opposition members who disrupted the Lok Sabha opening, linking the incident to the NEET‑UG 2026 examination controversy. She later labeled the student protesters behind the alleged NEET‑UG paper‑leak as “obscene,” “Generation Gutter,” and described protest footage as “puke‑inducing,” announcing a brief digital detox.
On 27 July, Ranaut intensified her attack, again targeting the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)‑led protests and alleging abusive remarks toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das defended the youth, questioning Ranaut’s claim of being a student.
The protests, which began on 20 June at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and demanded accountability for the alleged paper‑leak, culminated in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
On 29 July, Ranaut’s “Generation Gutter” remarks sparked fresh backlash. She reiterated the label on Instagram, later clarifying it was not aimed at all youth. Actors such as Sonu Sood called the comments “very shameful.” CJP’s Das responded with a light‑hearted reply and called for dialogue. Maharashtra leader Uddhav Thackeray defended the protesters, likening their treatment to that of Shivaji Maharaj. In Lucknow, Congress workers attempted to burn an effigy of Ranaut; a police inspector seized part of it, a moment that went viral, while similar effigy protests were staged by the Arunachal Mahila Congress demanding an unconditional apology.
On 31 July, Ranaut posted a note condemning online trolls who repurposed clips from her films to criticize her stance on the protests. She warned against misleading teenagers by conflating cinematic characters with real‑world behaviour and reposted her earlier parliamentary speech, emphasizing that her remarks should not be distorted.
