India-Pakistan naval collision in the Arabian Sea

Overview

An Indian Navy warship and a Pakistani naval vessel, identified as the Yarmuk-class PNS Hunain, collided in international waters in the North Arabian Sea on September 15. The incident occurred while the Indian vessel was conducting a routine surveillance mission and the Pakistani vessel was participating in the SEASPARK-2026 exercise.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires to lodge a formal protest, characterizing the conduct of the Pakistani naval unit as “unacceptable and unprofessional.” Indian officials stated the maneuver violated Article 10 of a 1991 bilateral agreement requiring a minimum separation of three nautical miles between naval ships and submarines. Indian officials further alleged that the Pakistani ship approached at high speed and performed unsafe maneuvers, leading to the contact.

While the Indian warship reportedly sustained no significant damage and continued its mission, the PNS Hunain sustained damage and was forced to return to Karachi harbor. In response to the incident, Pakistan has also lodged a diplomatic protest, alleging that an Indian vessel conducted provocative maneuvers within Pakistan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
