India Parliament protest over Ram Temple donations
Entities: Ram Temple (Ayodhya) · Rahul Gandhi · Pappu Yadav · Rajesh Ranjan (Pappu Yadav) · Ayodhya Ram Temple
Overview
On 31 July 2026 Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan (Pappu Yadav) staged a saffron‑clad street‑theatre inside the Lok Sabha, mimicking the alleged misappropriation of donations for the Ayodhya Ram Temple. He pretended to pocket cash while opposition figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge and Samajwadi Party MPs placed money in the box and called for Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation. Speaker Om Birla expressed displeasure and the Lok Sabha Secretariat deemed the demonstration inappropriate.
In the aftermath, the BJP, several Hindu right‑wing organisations and religious seers lodged multiple FIRs at Jehangirpuri and Kotwali police stations, accusing Yadav, Gandhi and others of hurting religious sentiments and insulting Sanatan Dharma. Opposition leaders say the stunt was meant to highlight missing receipts, deleted CCTV footage and alleged irregularities in the temple‑fund management, framing the issue as a key election topic ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls. Samajwadi Party MLA Pallavi Patel stressed the intent was to seek a governmental response, not to offend religion.
On 1 August, yoga guru Baba Ramdev condemned any insult to Bhagwa, sants, Lord Ram or Sanatan heritage, calling such acts “highly objectionable” and “heinous”. He urged that protests remain peaceful, democratic and free of abusive language, warning that anarchic actions would not achieve meaningful outcomes, and appealed for constructive thinking among youth while addressing grievances through constitutional means.
