India technological leadership in AI and biotechnology

Indian government officials have outlined a strategic vision for the nation to lead the next industrial revolution through advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology.

Initial statements highlighted key initiatives such as the BioE3 policy, the National Quantum Mission, and the IndiaAI Mission. These efforts aim to position India at the forefront of emerging technologies, following a period of rapid growth in the space economy driven by private sector participation.

Subsequent discussions emphasized a transition from being the ‘pharmacy of the world’ to becoming the ‘laboratory of the world.’ This involves integrating AI into drug discovery, personalized medicine, and disease surveillance. To support this, Centres of Excellence for AI in healthcare have been established at institutions including AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and AIIMS Rishikesh. There is also a strategic push to develop domestic platforms and infrastructure to secure leadership in the development of Artificial Superintelligence and Artificial General Intelligence.
