India telecom manufacturing development
Overview
India is advancing its domestic telecommunications manufacturing capabilities through large-scale infrastructure projects and private sector growth. The Department of Telecommunications and the Madhya Pradesh government are developing the Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Gwalior, intended to be Asia’s first integrated industrial cluster for telecom equipment, semiconductors, and optical fiber.
Initial investor interest for the Gwalior TMZ reached approximately ₹5,500 crore, with 24 companies expressing interest. To support this, the Madhya Pradesh government prepared incentives and subsidies estimated at ₹8,000 crore. The project is expected to create over 18,000 jobs and utilize a “plug-and-play” model to facilitate rapid operations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the zone on October 29.
Complementing these government efforts, private sector activity has increased. Ericsson reported that its Indian ecosystem has produced over 15,000 antennas and 25 million components since July 2025, and is now exporting this equipment to international markets, including Europe, to support 5G and AI-driven network architectures.
