India tourism and hospitality industry development
Overview
India’s tourism and hospitality sectors are experiencing significant growth and structural shifts. The hospitality industry is expanding with a projection of 100,000 new branded hotel rooms through 2030, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. This expansion is accompanied by a rise in specialized MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) infrastructure, such as standalone convention centres, which is altering traditional hotel service models.
During the WION Iconic Tourism Summit, government officials highlighted the sector's role in India’s economic trajectory. Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat noted the resilience of India’s growth and the emergence of experiential travel as a key trend. Plans were also discussed to transform Delhi into an international tourism hub.
Industry representatives, including the Hotel Association of India (HAI), have addressed challenges such as fluctuating room rates during major events and the need for consistent state-level implementation of tourism industry benefits, including lower utility tariffs and improved financing access.
