India-Vietnam maritime and defense cooperation

Overview

India and Vietnam have engaged in a series of high-level meetings and exercises to strengthen bilateral maritime and defense cooperation.

In late August 2026, the Indian and Vietnam Coast Guards held their 7th high-level meeting in Chennai. The discussions focused on maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, marine pollution response, and capacity building under a 2015 Memorandum of Understanding. This meeting was followed by the SAHYOG-HOPTAC joint exercise off the coast of Chennai, involving the deployment of the Vietnamese vessel CSB 8002.

In early September 2026, defense ties were further reinforced through military-to-military engagements. Indian Army Chief of Staff General Dhiraj Seth met with Lieutenant General Le Van Huong of the Vietnam People’s Army in New Delhi. These discussions aimed to deepen defense cooperation and support regional stability, building upon previous high-level talks between the Indian Air Force and the Vietnamese military to strengthen the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
