India Waqf property digitisation via UMEED portal

Overview

Following the launch of the UMEED Central Portal in June 2025, the Indian Ministry of Minority Affairs has been working to create a unified digital database of Waqf properties to improve governance and curb illegal encroachments.

By late July 2026, significant progress was reported in West Bengal and Kerala, with West Bengal documenting over 133,000 properties and Kerala registering nearly 80,000 assets. By mid-August 2026, the Ministry reported that a total of 7.99 lakh Waqf properties had been enlisted on the portal nationwide.

Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal recorded the highest number of enlisted properties, while Maharashtra reported the highest number of property returns to Waqf makers. Although the rollout has progressed, some users reported intermittent technical and operational issues during the initial phase.
