Indian Air Force fifth-generation fighter procurement
Overview
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is evaluating its procurement strategies for fifth-generation fighter aircraft to maintain combat fleet strength and counter advancements in Pakistan. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh indicated that India might seek foreign fifth-generation options if delays continue in the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.
During the 22nd Subroto Mukerjee International Seminar in New Delhi, held alongside the Tarang Shakti 2026 multinational air exercise, Air Chief Marshal Singh addressed the security environment and technological challenges of a multipolar world. He reiterated that the United States has made no official offer to sell F-35 stealth fighters to India, adding a humorous remark regarding the restricted access Indian officials have to the aircraft.
Regarding Russian technology, Singh noted that no decision has been made yet on whether to evaluate the Su-57, despite Moscow’s offer to manufacture the aircraft in India with technology transfer. He clarified that the IAF will proceed with such evaluations only once instructed by the government. The IAF continues to prioritize indigenous development alongside potential multi-role fighter aircraft (MRFA) negotiations.
