Indian Army Nagastra loitering munitions procurement
Overview
The Indian Army has expanded its precision-strike capabilities through the acquisition of Nagastra loitering munitions from Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL).
In mid-October 2026, the Army received 450 Nagastra 1R units via an emergency procurement route. These short-range munitions feature a two-metre Circular Error Probable and the ability to abort missions mid-flight for safe recovery. The system includes 360-degree gimbal cameras and encrypted telemetry for use in contested environments.
Following this, the Army began receiving the Nagastra-2 anti-tank loitering munition system. Developed in Nagpur, the Nagastra-2 is equipped with a 4 kg tandem shaped-charge warhead capable of penetrating 650 mm of Rolled Homogeneous Armour. It offers a strike range of 50 km in ‘fire-and-forget’ mode and a 25 km range in ‘recover-and-reuse’ mode, with specialized electronic counter-countermeasures to resist jamming and spoofing.
