Indian Army tactical vehicle modernization

The Indian Army is focusing on the specialized modification and procurement of tactical vehicle platforms to enhance operational capabilities in diverse environments.

Initial efforts involve customizing existing vehicle models—such as the Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Safari, Toyota Hilux, and Maruti Gypsy—for extreme conditions like snow, deserts, and coastal regions. These modifications include integrating 4x4 drive systems for traction, applying military green camouflage, and reconfiguring interiors for weaponry and tactical equipment storage.

Building on these mobility requirements, the Army is now seeking vendors to develop specialized, remotely operated 4x4 platforms. These unmanned vehicles are intended to tow field artillery guns to facilitate “shoot-and-scoot” tactics. By allowing for rapid relocation after firing, these platforms aim to protect soldiers from counter-battery fire and enemy drones. The proposed technical specifications include a 4,000 kg towing capacity and a 10 kW electric motor.
