Indian aviation sector trends and airline performance
Overview
In August, India’s domestic air passenger traffic experienced a 6.34 per cent year-on-year decline, totaling 1.21 crore passengers. During this period, IndiGo maintained a dominant 65 per cent market share, while the Air India Group’s share increased to 26.7 per cent. The Civil Aviation Minister noted that the DGCA is monitoring SpiceJet’s financial and operational status.
By the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, Air India and Air India Express reported a combined loss of approximately $2.3 billion, more than doubling the losses from the previous year. This occurred alongside a nearly 9% decline in revenue. In response, the Tata Group has appointed the former CEO of Ethiopian Airlines to lead a restructuring effort, which chairman N. Chandrasekaran described as a “five-to-10-year journey” due to challenges involving legacy systems, fleet renewal, and technical staff shortages.
