High-profile Indian actors have increasingly approached the Delhi High Court to seek legal protection for their personality and publicity rights. In September 2026, actor Manoj Bajpayee filed a petition alleging that his image, voice, and identity were being used without authorization to promote products and through artificial intelligence tools. His claims specifically cited the use of his photographs by H2PG Designs Private Limited to create false impressions of him wearing certain apparel, as well as the potential for AI chatbots and voice cloning to misuse his persona. During proceedings, the court raised questions regarding jurisdiction. Following this, actor and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut also approached the Delhi High Court to prevent the unauthorized commercial exploitation of her name, image, likeness, and other distinctive attributes. In October 2026, the Delhi High Court issued significant rulings to reinforce these protections. The court restrained the unauthorized use of actor Vijay Deverakonda’s name, image, and voice, specifically including safeguards against artificial intelligence (AI), deepfakes, and face-morphing technology. Justice Vikas Mahajan directed social media platforms, including Meta, Google, and X, to remove infringing content. Additionally, the court ordered online marketplaces and domain registrars to take down infringing links and suspend specified domains within 72 hours. In a separate ongoing matter, the court directed veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan to appear personally regarding his 2022 lawsuit seeking a permanent injunction against the unauthorized commercial exploitation of his identity. Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav noted that Bachchan’s presence is essential to finalize or formalize settlements with certain defendants. Actor Kriti Sanon has also approached the court to prevent the unauthorized use of her name, image, and likeness, specifically addressing concerns regarding digital impersonation and AI-generated content.
