Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to undertake significant international travel in December 2026. In Canada, negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) are being fast-tracked. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated at the United Nations General Assembly that trade talks are making “good progress,” with an aim to conclude by the mid-December G20 summit. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed a fifth round of negotiations is scheduled for October 5 to October 9 in Canada. India's High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, suggested the agreement could be completed as early as November. A formal signing during a potential December visit may also include defense and aerospace agreements, as well as expanded commitments under the ‘Talent and Innovation Strategy’ to bolster educational ties. The trade deal is viewed as a strategic move for Canada to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on the United States; if successful, it could potentially double bilateral trade to an estimated $70 billion. These efforts follow a period of diplomatic tension between the two nations that began in 2023. Simultaneously, Modi is expected to visit the United States to attend the G20 Leaders Summit at the Trump National Doral Miami in Florida on December 14 and 15. Hosted by President Donald Trump, the visit may include a bilateral meeting between the two leaders and preparations for a Quad summit involving India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor has indicated the United States would welcome the Prime Minister's return for the G20. While discussions regarding a potential subsequent visit to Canada have been noted, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not yet released an official schedule.
