Indian electoral roll and Election Commission controversy
Overview
Disputes regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the integrity of the Election Commission of India (ECI) have intensified. Initially, allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sought clarification regarding voter list changes made without their knowledge. As the situation progressed, the BJP accused the opposition INDIA bloc of attempting to create an “atmosphere of anarchy” by discrediting constitutional institutions. Following demonstrations led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the opposition has alleged ‘vote theft’ and illegal unilateral changes to ‘Form 6’ during the SIR process, which resulted in the removal of over 130 million names. In response, the BJP held multiple press conferences to defend the ECI, clarifying that while an additional declaration was added to Form 6, the Commission did not illegally modify the form itself. The BJP noted that approximately 30 million names were removed due to death and 70 million due to permanent relocation. The conflict has escalated into legal and personal political challenges. Eleven leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding SIR irregularities, though the Registry has since flagged 14 defects in the writ. Concurrently, Congress MP Pawan Khera alleged the central government has been “bullying and blackmailing” two Election Commissioners. As protests in Delhi target Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, BJP leaders have escalated their rhetoric. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has alleged a conspiracy, potentially involving foreign interests such as George Soros, to incite violence and force a regime change similar to recent unrest in Bangladesh and France. Other BJP figures, including Dharmendra Pradhan, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Nitin Nabin, have criticized the use of student activists and the national flag to destabilize democratic institutions.
