Indian farmer protests over agricultural resources

Overview

Farmers in Rajasthan have engaged in prolonged demonstrations regarding irrigation and resource management. In the Sriganganagar district, protesters led by the ‘Khet Bachao Kisan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti’ have entered their 39th day of protesting for changes to irrigation water regulation and the release of water into the Anupgarh branch canal. These protests have involved skirmishes with law enforcement, the detention of individuals, and the burning of effigies of government officials.

Additional unrest has emerged regarding fertilizer availability. In Rajasthan’s Baran district, farmers blocked highways to protest acute shortages of DAP fertilizer and failures in the e-token distribution system. Similar grievances were reported in Madhya Pradesh, where farmers blocked roads to demand resolutions to server issues and the e-token booking system, which they claim have persisted for 22 days.
