The Indian Union ~~Cabinet~~ Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a series of major infrastructure projects totaling approximately 13,041 crore rupees, focusing on rail and highway connectivity. Among these initiatives is the four-laning of an 82.578-km stretch of National Highway 22 in Bihar, connecting Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and Sonbarsa. This ₹3,590.73 crore project, implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Mode, is intended to strengthen connectivity to the India-Nepal border via the Bhithamore Land Port and improve access to the Buddhist Circuit. The highway upgrade includes seven major bridges, such as a 340-metre bridge over the Bagmati River. This expansion is expected to reduce travel time between Muzaffarpur and Sonbarsa from two hours to one hour. The remaining ₹9,450 crore of the approved budget is allocated to four railway multi-tracking projects: the Kharagpur-Bhadrak fourth line, the Bhadrak-Haridaspur fourth line, the Gummidipundi-Gudur third and fourth line, and the Cuttack-Paradip third and fourth line. These expansions, part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aim to reduce congestion and increase capacity by an estimated 13 million tons of freight. Spanning West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, these railway projects are expected to impact approximately 6,448 villages.
