India continues judicial elevations and Supreme Court moves

Following the appointment of permanent leadership across all 25 Indian High Courts, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has moved forward with further judicial elevations. In Delhi, the Collegium recommended eight judicial officers from the Delhi Higher Judicial Service for elevation to the Delhi High Court. These individuals—Gurvinder Pal Singh, Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt, and Arun Bhardwaj—were subsequently sworn in by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya. This expansion brings the Delhi High Court’s total strength to 50 judges, approaching its sanctioned capacity of 60. Concurrent with these appointments, Reetesh Singh was appointed as the new Registrar General on deputation, succeeding Arun Bhardwaj. On September 28, 2026, the Collegium recommended the elevation of three High Court Chief Justices to the Supreme Court: Justice Sunita Agarwal (Gujarat High Court), Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya (Delhi High Court), and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh (Telangana High Court). On October 5, 2026, Chief Justice Surya Kant administered the oath of office to these three new judges, increasing the Supreme Court’s working strength from 34 to 37. This brings the court to within one position of its sanctioned strength of 38, which was recently increased via the Supreme Court Amendment Act, 2026.
