Indian legislative proposal to rename Kerala

Overview

The Indian government has initiated legislative processes to officially rename the state of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’. The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, was introduced in the Lok Sabha following a unanimous resolution by the Kerala Legislative Assembly in June 2024 and prior central government approval in February.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to move the name change bill alongside the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha.
