In June 2026, the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet deployed a task group consisting of INS Udaygiri, INS Kavaratti, and INS Shakti on goodwill visits to Southeast Asia, visiting Ho Chi Minh City and Sattahip to enhance interoperability and support the “MAHASAGAR vision of a collaborative maritime order.” Simultaneously, the sail-training ship INS Sudarshini conducted its “Lokayan 26” trans-oceanic voyage. After visiting North American ports in late June and July, the vessel continued its mission toward Europe. Following a port call in Ponta Delgada in the Azores—which included a Colours ceremony for India’s 80th Independence Day and a scheduled joint Passing Exercise (PASSEX) with the Portuguese vessel NRP Sagres on 21 August—the ship arrived in Lisbon. The Lisbon visit marked the 15th port of call in a 10-month, 22,000-nautical-mile expedition intended to visit 18 ports across 13 countries. The mission serves as a training platform for over 200 Indian Navy and Coast Guard trainees, focusing on traditional seamanship such as celestial navigation. Beyond training, the deployment acts as a diplomatic tool to strengthen maritime ties, highlighting historical connections and promoting the concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (The World is a Family). In September 2026, the expedition continued through Europe. The vessel completed a port call in Barcelona, Spain, engaging in professional and cultural exchanges with the Spanish Navy and opening the ship to the public. Subsequently, the ship arrived at Livorno Port, Italy, where it conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Italian Navy’s sail training ship, ITS Palinuro, to enhance interoperability. During the Italian visit, the ship’s Commanding Officer, Commander Ravikanth, met with the Mayor of Livorno and the Commandant of the Italian Naval Academy. On 12 September, INS Sudarshini departed Livorno after a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening maritime partnerships and aligning with the MAHASAGAR vision.
