Indian Vande Bharat sleeper train development
Overview
The development of Vande Bharat sleeper trains in India has progressed from industrial partnerships to technical expansion plans. Initially, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) formed a 50:50 joint venture to manage the manufacturing and 35-year maintenance of 80 trainsets, a project valued at approximately ₹24,000 crore.
Following these manufacturing arrangements, Indian Railways announced plans to expand the train configuration from 16 to 24 coaches to support longer overnight journeys. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has been assigned to manufacture 50 of these trainsets. The expanded 24-coach model is expected to include a dedicated pantry car for food service. Current sleeper models feature a maximum service speed of 160 kmph, Kavach safety systems, and various passenger amenities including ergonomic berths and specialized facilities for accessibility.
