Indiana Fever post-playoff developments

Overview

Following their first-round playoff elimination by the Las Vegas Aces, the Indiana Fever are navigating internal player critiques, roster management decisions, and league-wide controversies.

Postseason tensions rose following an incident in Game 2 where Aces star A’ja Wilson confronted a fan. Guard Sophie Cunningham criticized the WNBA for a perceived ‘double standard,’ suggesting Wilson’s status protected her from discipline. While Fever General Manager Amber Cox defended the team’s fanbase against media criticism, stating such attacks have ‘no basis in reality,’ former player Brianna Turner disputed this, citing ongoing complaints regarding the fans. Additionally, GM Lin Dunn urged the league to better protect players like Caitlin Clark from the ‘frenzy’ and targeted hostility accompanying increased media attention.

As the team enters the offseason, the franchise has identified re-signing Kelsey Mitchell as a ‘major priority.’ Mitchell, who is entering unrestricted free agency after nine seasons with the team, had a standout season averaging 24.7 points per game. She noted that while team chemistry is vital, she intends to be ‘selfish’ in her decision-making to prioritize her own career needs during her first professional decision outside the Indiana organization.
