Following the August 2026 regulatory overhaul in India, the government has intensified requirements for LPG consumers to prevent subsidy diversion and fraudulent connections. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has mandated Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) to qualify for the ₹210 per cylinder subsidy, effective 1 October 2026. As the September 30 deadline approaches, consumers must complete mandatory Aadhaar biometric e-KYC to avoid the immediate suspension of subsidies. Failure to verify will require customers to pay the full market or commercial rate. Additionally, those without e-KYC may be restricted to smaller 5 kg or 10 kg refill options. While the primary method involves fingerprint or face authentication via mobile applications, distributor showrooms, or delivery personnel, an ‘opt-out’ option is available through company portals or WhatsApp chatbots; however, choosing this will result in the loss of all government subsidies. Major oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, are implementing this process via mobile applications, distributor showrooms, or during cylinder delivery. As of late September 2026, approximately 89.9 percent of the 27.43 crore active domestic consumers have completed authentication. While unverified users will not face immediate disconnection, they must pay the full market price without managing the implementation. In a regional development, the Jammu and Kashmir government has approved a plan to provide six free LPG cylinders annually to approximately 8.79 lakh economically vulnerable families under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) scheme, utilizing Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to linked bank accounts.
